From The Story of Bell County. Vol. 2:
William McDowell Sr. arrived in Texas via Georgia and South Carolina. He was a resident of Washington County, Texas in 1846, when he was on the poll tax list for that year. The 1850 census for Washington County, says that all of the family members were born in Ireland. At that time the family consisted of William, 54: Polly, 51; Silvey, 20; John, 27; William, 22; and Jacob, 18.
On March 13, 1854, William McDowell purchased a tract of land in Bell County on Nolan Creek about 12 miles above the three forks forming Little River. On December 15,1856, McDowell sold 700 acres of this land to E.T. Estes, his son-in-law. These transactions marked the arrival of the McDowell-Estes families in Nolan Valley.
William McDowell received a bounty warrant for 640 acres on February 3, 1860. Service was not shown on this warrant, issued by a special act of the Legislature. It was likely for service in the Texas Revolution.
McDowell and E. T. Estes were early benefactors of the Nolan Valley community and gave the land for McDowell Cemetery, McDowell School and Nolan Valley Baptist Church. The church continues to serve the community. The school was consolidated with Belton schools, but a historical marker is on the site.
The last official record of William McDowell and his wife, Margaret, is when they were listed on the 1860 census of Bell County. The family then consisted of Jane; Sarah Ann; Silvey; John; William Jr. and Jacob Hamilton.
From The History of Bell County....
In 1854 (Deed Book D p. 562) William purchased a tract of land (648 acres) in Bell County. In December 1856, he sold 700 acres of land (Vol F p. 612) to E.T. Estes, his son-in-law. Bell County Census 1860, listed as age 70 (1790) and wife Margaret listed as age 66 (1794), both born in Ireland. Made will January 11,1865. Will probated August 27, 1866.
